In a contemporary historical adventure mystery, what is the important part of the story – the characters, the adventure or the mystery?
Some have said, only the characters matter. What about the adventure or the mystery? What do you think?
To me, it is the adventure and mystery – it is how your characters participate in the adventure or solve the mystery.
Others say it is all about the characters. Its their flaws, how do they over come them. The conflict. The opposing forces. The thrusts and counter-thrust – really not the adventure or the mystery – maybe at the most the setting.
Then why do they not have a genre called “Characters?”
Your thoughts?
