The Carian Codex: Status – Extensive Editing to Begin

Writers often talk about editing like it’s a delicate surgery, a careful stitch here, a subtle trim there. But sometimes, you look at your work and realize that what’s needed isn’t a delicate touch — it’s a controlled demolition. And friends, that’s exactly what I’m doing. I’m strapping on my metaphorical hard hat, grabbing the dynamite, and getting ready to blow my story wide open. Why? Because it’s the only way to rebuild it into something greater.

My latest project is facing the editor’s crucible, and while it survived the third draft, it didn’t emerge unscathed. The feedback was clear: while there’s potential, it’s buried beneath too much exposition, a lack of character depth, and stakes that don’t pulse with enough urgency. The puzzle-solving plot that once felt intriguing now seems like an academic exercise with no emotional hook. It’s time to amp up the tension, heighten the stakes, and create characters who not only live on the page but battle their way through it, and claw there way out.

The challenge? Taking this story beyond an archaeological mystery unraveled with a nod and a shrug. It’s time to make the story breathe, to build a sense of urgency where every scene crackles with purpose and the characters push and pull through conflicts that reveal their core. It’s not enough for my protagonist to be a capable participant; they need to fight their way through obstacles with choices that could cost them everything.

I’ve been reminded that each scene should be its own living, breathing moment, driven by action and internal struggles that resonate on multiple levels. Forget tidy solutions — we’re looking for choices that bite, that tear at the seams of who these characters are. This is where real change happens, where personalities clash, and even the most capable heroes stumble over their flaws and pick themselves up with something new learned (or maybe lost) along the way. It will be a adventure mystery that screams at you to not put it down.

I want to bring readers into a world where emotions swirl in messy, human ways — where frustration, joy, determination, and fear dance together. Where no decision is without consequence, and the path to victory is neither straight nor clear. The best stories make us feel the tug of war between what we want and what we know is right, and this story deserves no less.

So, what comes next? I’m rewriting from the ground up. Scenes that read like summaries will be torn apart and reconstructed with vivid, heart-pounding action. Characters who were once flat will wrestle with internal and external conflicts, revealing the quirks and contradictions that make them real. They will disagree with each other. Relationships will bend, snap, and mend, but not without scars.

This isn’t just an edit; it’s a reinvention. I’m blowing it up to rebuild it stronger, fiercer, more alive than ever. And when the dust settles, I promise you, it’ll be a story worth holding your breath for.

Stay tuned. This is going to be one wild ride!

About the author

Hi! My name is Ron Crandall, I’m a writer of contemporary historical fiction from the U.S. In this blog I share my writing experiences and the contemporary adventures of my characters in various cultures in Southeastern Europe and Northwestern Asia as they try solve historical mysteries. The mysteries start prior to our written history - a classic example of those who hold dear knowledge, self sacrifice, friendship and bravery versus those who desire domination, deceit and ultimately chaos.
